this is just pure brilliance. im a poc in silicon valley and i run into this shit with white people all the time. never with asian (chinese/indian/etc) ... hmm.
For all the people who are curious as to what the original meanings of each popular words are racism-belief that one or more races is inferior to another stereotype- an oversimplified standardized image of a person or group racial prejudice-irrational dislike of a ethnic group Don't let popculture tell you how to interepret all 3 as racism
Valiant effort indeed, but this video has some failings, not that anybody is going to read/consider them, imho: 1. Yes, too many people obsess over emphasizing the non-African contributions to our (black) ancestry, but imho, many of these are black people. Although it is due to an education of Eurocentric standards of beauty to an ethnic demographic already favoring of "fairness", any genetic loosening of the hair, thinning of the lips, narrowing of the nose, and lightening of the skin is far more appreciated by blacks due to past (and to a lesser extent) socio-economic pressures. In other words whites are so much more oblivious to their preferences for "fairness" in blacks than blacks are, because blacks are the ones catering themselves to this preference in order to make it. HOWEVER!!! There is such thing as innocent curiosity. Until the "your eyes are so light and beautiful comment" we have no right to assume any devious intentions. Humans are generally endowed with a BENIGN sense of ethnic curiosity as a possible remnant of hyperextended kin determination methods. Just like asking about somebody's sexuality, there is no inherent attempt to shove somebody into some kind of label box-trap like liberal society is so over-dramatically against today. Maybe we just want to know for the sake of knowing. I think the bigger fault of whites here is not always being sensitive to the fact that they didn't keep legitimate records of our ancestry, to include their minglings with us. Conclusion: Imho, there's nothing wrong with asking. The only major fucked up things here: assigning a halo effect to Eurocentric phenotypes and asking this question a hundred times yet being oblivious to the ancestral identity (or lack thereof) crisis many African Americans suffer from on both conscious and subconscious levels. 2. Sorry in advanced, because this video is harsh, I'ma be a little harsh too, also because I've had a bad. OK, wow, the major failing here, imo, was the handling of linguistic discrimination. If you heard an insertion of closed vowels into consonant clusters combined with failure to rhoticize properly, would it be wrong to assume they are Asian? After all, it's not like Asian languages, which are associated with... oh my God... ASIAN PEOPLE, lack clear rhotic sounds or major consonant clusters. OH WAIT, they DO lack those things. In other words, would you really fault yourself for considering it strange for me to show up to your office after donning a convincing Japanese accent over the phone? If I added an "e" before syllable initial consonant clusters beginning with s (estrong, estupid. escanner) would you not expect me to be latino, as this is a characteristic of Spanish, the native language of the majority of LATINOS? Why should black people be any different? We are not half of a minority, we have linguistic patterns that, while not absolute, reliably predict our speech patterns. Is it so wrong to associate BAE, black accented English, or AAVE, Afro-American Vernacular, (different from BAE) with, I dunno, BLACK PEOPLE?!?! This is not to say ethnic minorities should be thought of as incapable of adopting standard English, but rather, why should we have to? Language was developed as a means of communication, not a means of being punished for not sounding like white people. I'm sorry, but some of y'all white supremacist grammarians who are frowning at my usage of "y'all" need to stfu and neuter yourselves to prevent your gene pool from becoming a cesspool. Let see, how many dialects and languages (British English, French, Norman Precursor of French, Anglo Saxon English precursors, Spanish, German, Middle English, Latin, Greek to name a few bastardized contributions to "Standardized" English) did y'all elitists butcher to create your orthographically disastrous, morphologically impoverished, semantically contradictory, inconsistent abomination of a language? HOW THE FUCK are y'all syntactical skinheads gonna complain when blacks find it within their hearts to rectify your ridiculous orthography, unnecessary phonology, and lack of verb tenses in the form of AAVE? Well, I guess it's not just you hipster scum and conservative inbreds behind it, apparently this guy thinks "ebonics" (an outdated term) to be the language of the dumb as well. How is "well spoken" in binary opposition with "ebonics"? Maybe you should let bossman of the hook, you have just as many issues with linguistic discrimination as he does. Take a lesson from your cousin Rodney. Language is just a medium of knowledge, not knowledge of a medium. I'm gonna stop here because ain't nobody gonna read this far. Shame how people gloss over viewpoints that are not their own. Maybe if y'all did that, this would have broken some kind of mold. Sorry for my pissiness. Great acting all around. Martin should work a little on his ranting though, not as good as in the elevator.
Personally, I thought both videos were good and brought up points that people should think on and I'm glad that things were balanced between them. I've seen some of the PSA vids too, along with some of the other racism vids. Keep this up! You're doing a good service by having these out like this. I wish all of you making these films the best! (and I just loved that one about folks wearing Asian characters on their clothes. ROTFLMAO!!!) To: ThisIsTheBestNameIGot I'm a "white" guy that grew up in the South and I read through your entire message and thought you brought up some interesting points that brought some balance to the discussion on the first video. I am wondering why you didn't care to comment on the second video though. And for those wondering why I say "white", yeah, I'm one of those that's into the true multi-ethnic background, but mainly for myself and my family, what other people call themselves is up to them, and more power to them if they can get a genetic test done as they are so expensive. I just get tired of people saying I'm "white" because of a basic skin color when I have Israeli and Native American Indian blood in me along with the Welsh and German blood that lends to the lighter tone for my skin when I'm not tanned, and I'm wondering about how people will treat my kids since I'm married to a very black Zambian woman and the other day when I, and I alone, took our 4 year old son to register for pre-school, the white lady filling out the form labeled him as white even though his skin tone is darker than I am. I guarantee you that if my wife had been there - with or without me present - he would have instantly been labeled as "African-American". Why can't there just be a good "Other" or "Mixed heritage" box on all forms? Hell, even the recent Census form was fucked up that way. There's sensitivity, and then there's just plain stupidity. Anyway, I like the videos, keep 'em coming. They're quite funny while making great points for all to think on.
alot of this i find is very true and brings up alot of great points in shows alot of truth in a funny situation love this video probably my favorite out of all reckless tortuga because it so real and true. plus it has my two favorite line ever "Good luck with the white boys club" and "mother fucker better higher me, shit thats whats up, bitch" classic stuff.
lol i thought the secretary will say what are you saying what was your job or something like that wtf does someone think at telling someone ''what are you?''
Good job on the acting guys keep up the good work and that blond chicks hot even though shes taken. Yeah I do get pissed when whites ask what are you. Hope you guys go big and get in to hollywood.
this video is so true. im also light skinned with freckles. and i experienced a situation similar to this today with one of my blonde female co-workers. during one of our slow hours, i was standing next to her minding my own business. when out of no where she asks "how do you have freckles, you're black?" she kind of muffled the word black realizing how it sounded coming out of her mouth. i laughed it off and went on to explain how i also had two black parents and somewhere back in my ancestry i had french mixed in. but after watching this video, i so wish i knew that whole "your ancestor raped my ancestor which brought about my freckles and light complexion
this is really good, especially the bosses role is well acted. the same shit goes on in europe, germany. so its not only a black and white thing. i am polish and everytime i meet a german guy he always uses to ask, where i am from bla bla bla, etc., and that i dont exaclty look like polish, perhaps got some russian genes in it... damn! and according to the interview, i made my MBA with an A grade, and still get no fucking job or even dont get invited to a fucking interview!!!! and all germans who got a fuckin C or worse are actually working at big name companies... to be short racism sucks! keep doing more vids like this!
@Marcin. "to be short racism sucks!" - Actually what sucks is people who don't even understand the difference between nationalist and racist. Since when did Polish people become a whole race of their own? Perhaps you would be better off applying for jobs on the muppet show.
