Why the Videos Don't Work

Hey Guys,

Jason here, I wanted to address the complaints about not being able to watch video on RecklessTortuga.com. This only applies to people who live outside the US.

I’m going to be honest with you guys. Here is the problem:

We have no ability to put ads on videos that are viewed outside of the US. As a result, we have to pay for every single video view that happens on our website from someone outside the US and those views cost double the amount of US views.

At first we decided to just pay for it ourselves and move on, but with the overwhelming traffic that we have gotten and the increase of our international audience, we just could not afford it anymore.

The whole reason we have a website and just don’t put everything on YouTube is the ability to control our own content. It allows us to guarantee that if you want to watch The Online Gamer no matter what happens it’s there and it is exactly how we intended it to be. (The Online Gamer: Wedding - Ep.2 - Director’s Cut)

We have operated the site at loss since we launched it, but now it’s gotten a little too much for us to pay for. We simply can’t afford to pay for the whole thing.

So, we have two choices:

Leave international traffic off and let only US based fans see the stuff on the site.

or

Charge $1 a month to just international viewers and they get to see everything ad free. While US audiences still get the ads.

We really don’t like ether choice. I’m not a fan of subscription services on the internet with the exception of Hulu & Netflix. We are not Hulu or Netflix. There really is no other way for us to do this right now. We will try our best to figure out a different way but now these are the choices we got.

We want you to decide. Ultimately it is you who has to pay for it and rather than try to BS you guys on a “Cool New Subscription Service” from Reckless Tortuga, we just want to be honest.

So with all that being said, if you are an international viewer and you want the ability to watch the videos on the site, we want you to vote for it by sending an email to:

In the subject line put: “I want RecklessTortuga.com” and if we get enough people that want it we will do the leg work on our end to turn it on for those people. If we don’t get enough we will just keep it how it is currently.

Ether way, we will still work hard to find another solution.

I don't really understand the point about advertising as there are Google adverts running along the right hand side. Surely Google can do international advertising.

If it does happen that international fans (me included) cant watch videos on RecklessTorutga.com this is all i would want:

That you still put up The Online Gamer onto youtube. But you have the episodes like directors cuts and mabye bot bleeping all the swearing.

I live in Denmark, and I would gladly pay $1/month to watch the videos on the website! A buck a month is nothing compared to the awesome entertainment value of the videos!!

You guys are not only entertaining, but also a pleasure to watch. Fans who have credit cards would happily pay $1 a month and a little bit more even, but those who have no credit cards will still have a problem... however if we were going to pay then we'd rather get a better service, seriously the current video player on your website is awful, is it really that hard to get a player that matches youtube's quality? or at least one that does not reload the whole film every time you try to seek back or forth!! charge us $2 or max it out to $5 a month, but please make sure we get a good quality in rewards.

and why not spread your works to netflix or any other network that brings money? you could make them exclusive episodes or something, I don't know how it works over there... but you guys definitely need to start making some serious bucks at this stage, hence if you've been singers or something!

When someone tries loading the page from outside the US, like me myself, set it to start the website through an american proxy. Not sure how to do this, but it should be possible.

Well I for one like the video player! sure its not the best quality but it works and its a nice layout.

Blip.tv pays pays for ads played by international users, why are not posting videos there and you can embedded on the site, is not so hard.

Hulu, pandora, veoh international ban I understand but this is STUPID.

I've done 6+ years in web development, administration, etc. I haven't done a lot with video content storage, but I guess I should throw my two cents into the hat if it doesn't hurt. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you cant advertise to international because the companies you advertise are American base, and it wouldn't pay to advertise to people who would probably won't ever purchase from the companies.

I don't like the idea of monthly subscriptions. One, you guys don't post a lot of content in a month. One or two videos. I don't blame you at all! I'm very well aware they take a lot of time! If you block content from international, you'll be hurting your reputation and limiting your popularity. I've thought of a few options.

1) Set up several advertisement dealerships. Depending on where the user is from, they'll watch advertisements based off their location. There are a few ways to implement this from a technical view, but I don't want to prolong this comment.

2) Donation button or system. You guys make some of the best videos without any subscription fee. I'm pretty confident a lot of people will donate. Some even from the U.S. This may be risky at first, but it probably will make itself worthy.

3) Bite the bullet and host it on a youtube, veoh, etc. I don't believe denying international people from watching the great videos.

okay so i was at a 1 year-olds birthday party today. some kids i knew in high school had a baby... anyways.. i saw that "the angry gamer" you tube videos were on the computer. I'd like to see the directors cuts, but not if it means you guys are haemorrhaging money because of it.
If you find a viable way of making them available to an international audience then that would be great, if not I'll live ;)

Any more Zombie action planned for the RecklessNoobs channel on Youtube? I really enjoyed the gameplay videos and just the banter between the 4 of you.

What you guys could do is a site with ads for inside of the US so outside of the US can see. To be more precise, you get a site with ads for US viewers, but keep this site so you can keep US viewers here and not-US viewers see the uncensored videos and Director's Cuts in a site with ads for inside the US. That would make everyone happy

So you are seriously trying to convince us that this website gets more hits than gaming websites? They manage to provide content to users anywhere in the world simply by using ads.......just like you guys do. You use Google Ads (amongst others) and I know for a fact they do country specific ad targeting. And if your web hosting, and ad services are that bad that unlike almost any other website in the world you can't provide a service outside US, then you really need to look at your hosting and ad providers.
Maybe all the US users should use AdBlockers, then you have to block from them also cos they aren't paying either........just saying.

Just put ad's on your YouTube vid's, you got tons of viewers every week, and yeah there are some people that actually click on an advertisement. So in no-time you'll get your money out of it. Or make the store more attractive so people buy more, place Google ad's, GO WILD! Now you see, that no site can hold it for so long without ad's. When they are loosing more money then that they actually make.
Yeah and its to sad to see your website all with advertisement, but unless your guys are millionaires it wont work without ad's or some other things that will resource money...

Guys, a lot of you are posting ridiculous and rather aggressive comments towards the RT crew, and like the minority of members here, I feel totally disgusted with this outrage. Yea, its a niusance, and it causes inconvenience to all you die-hard fans out there, and me being a super FAN of RT, I fully understand it. But to seriously start posting all this crap about the people who "originally and brilliantly created" this Sketch Comedy Group, its just over. Way over.

I'm an Australian, so unlike most viewers, I actually feel quite lucky that my country is developed enough to allow this luxury of watching brilliant sketch comedy from RT, and I feel for those who are less fortunate, but its not like they have TOTALLY inconvenienced us. I mean, 1. they have been posting their uncensored videos on youtube, and some US subscribers are also kind enough to post them on youtube for the rest of the world. 2. The fact that their site still gets updated on what videos are recently released means that they are keeping up with viewer demands, and that even if we can't watch it direct from RT.com, we can still watch it on youtube. 3. Also, for people like me who use Mozilla's download helper to download the vids in super high quality, it shows that we are effectively expanding RT!

Anyways, I just look forward to seeing more brilliant vids from RT in the future!

The people of RT crew have a life! Come on they are already giving up their time to make videos for us,I don't mind paying for RT because they are great i wouldn't mind if they had their own cable tv series. G'day Team RT,
thank you for all the great video you people produce. Yes it is sad we cannot access these video on this site outside of the US, however, I and I'm sure many international others would gladly pay a subscription to view your videos. Please do what you have to do to get the ball rolling.

BTW. The morons who think its Okay to abuse the RT Team, piss off!
